Participating in any Remembrance Service is always an honour, and being invited to the Baschurch Remembrance Day Parade, the Festival of Remembrance at Telford Minster in Southwater Square by the Mayor of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin and the Corbett School Remembrance were all particularly poignant.

The Baschurch Remembrance Day Service was attended by numerous dignitaries including Gill Harmer DL and the service was taken by my Chaplain and Rector of Baschurch, the Reverend Linda Cox.

Later that day, the Festival of Remembrance at Telford Minster was a convergence of various faiths and ethnicities, reflecting the rich tapestry of the community it serves.
The service, which bought together many different faiths and ethnicities, was taken by Rev’d Laura Lenander, with an address was by Rev’d Stuart Howes, the Assistant Rural Dean of Telford and a reading was by Raj Mehta, Chair of the Interfaith Council.

The following day, I then joined Corbett School in Baschurch for their own remembrance ceremony, and it was heartening to see people from different backgrounds and different ages groups coming together with a shared purpose: to honour and remember those who have sacrificed for the greater good.

The recent event, 'Behind the Bearskin,' proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening experience for all in attendance. Held at the prestigious Theatre Severn, the event featured the esteemed Garrison Sergeant Major Andrew (Vern) Stokes alongside Anna Turner JP, the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire.

The evening was filled with fascinating insights into the world of ceremonial duties and the rich traditions associated with the British Army. Garrison Sergeant Major Stokes captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge and experiences, offering a rare glimpse into the life behind the iconic bearskin hats.

It came as no surprise that the event sold out on both evenings, with the success of 'Behind the Bearskin' playing testament to the community's interest in learning more about the traditions and figures that play a significant role in British heritage.

Last month, I was invited along by the Baschurch WI to give a talk to their members, as they wanted to learn more about the role of a High Sheriff, and all things Shrieval.

The Baschurch WI members were wonderfully engaging, asking insightful questions about the role's impact on modern society and its relevance today. It was a delightful opportunity to share the enduring legacy of the High Sheriff's office and its ongoing contributions to community life.

In summary, while the role of High Sheriff may have shifted from its origins, it remains a vital part of the UK's heritage, symbolising a commitment to justice and community service, and I hope this talk inspired the members to appreciate the historical and contemporary significance of this esteemed position.

🚜 Pitching up at a different farm each month, The Butty Van is a Borderlands Chaplaincy project which brings Shropshire farmers together to spend time with each other, usually over a breakfast sandwich or two.

The Butty Van currently operates three butty vans, and each van relies purely on donations. I was invited to join in their 2nd birthday celebrations in Chapel Lawn, and arrived mid-morning, as it’s the time when they meet, given most farmers are likely to have done their morning jobs and are looking to have their first break, giving many of them some much needed company and a hearty bacon butty.

It was a pleasure to meet with both the farmers equally to enjoy a delicious bacon sandwich , and equally to see first hand how this great initiative has given so much back to local farmers who might otherwise suffer with extreme bouts of anxiety and stress.

Providing life changing children’s physiotherapy

Providing life changing children’s physiotherapy, The Movement Centre specialises in Targeted Training to help children who have Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or other diagnoses to achieve new skills, through increased strength and control of their movement.

Based in Oswestry, the charity relies on the kind support of trusts and foundations, corporate businesses, community groups and individuals, and I was delighted to be invited to be a part of their Open Day.

The work that they do is amazing and clearly changes the future for so many children and their families, and it was lovely to meet Theo and his Mum Claire, and hear how his course of therapy at The Movement Centre has really helped him.
