This was always going to be a tough one. Telford Detachment Cadet Leader, Vicki Ridgewell, had booked me to give a talk about the role and history of the High Sheriff – not a subject that was likely to grab the average 15 year old, and certainly not for the two-and-a-half-hour time slot I was given. The task was made harder because the previous week the cadets were visited by police negotiators who shared tales of hostage negotiations with terrorists followed by role play. I would have loved to have been there for that one.
I started, as I usually do, with the second Battle of Malden in 992 but even with the energy of Chris Evans on TFI Friday I could feel my audience slipping away. We retired early (very early) to the rest room, tried to do some exercises to help with public speaking, and ended up just chatting to the cadets who are a great bunch. Just wish I could have entertained them better.
