At the invitation of Michael Limbrey MBE, I had the great pleasure of launching the appeal for the Mongomery Canal Restoration Fund (www.restorethemontgomerycanal.uk). As a result of the sterling efforts of those involved in the restoration of the canal over the last 45 years, there are now only two miles to complete for the canal to become navigable right to the border with Powys. This appeal is to finance that final stretch to take the canal into Wales. The hope is that subsequently the canal will become navigable all the way to Welshpool and beyond within the next ten years. This would be a great achievement with benefits to tourism along the length of the canal.
We were joined by Mrs Sue Thompson, High Sheriff of Powys, and by the Rt Hon Sir Robert Atkins, North-West Region Chairman for the Inland Waterways Association, and are most grateful for their support.
