My wife and I attended a splendid ceremony at the foot of Lord Hill’s Column designed to advertise the importance, on both a local and a national level, of the column and its fine Coade stone statue, and to encourage as many people as possible to join the Friends of Lord Hill’s Column. The Shrewsbury Brass Band played a march written in honour of Lord Hill and, it is believed, not played for over 100 years. The Rev Richard Hayes, Chairman of the Friends of Lord Hill’s Column, is keen to get the number of Friends up from the current level of 1,900 to over 2,000 in order to strengthen the hand of Shropshire Council in its attempt to obtain the necessary funds to conserve this important monument.
